  1. I am planning a trip to glendalough wiyh my family and would like to know the charges to stay a night or ant weekend packages you might have going.

  2. Hello Toyin - what is your preference for accommodation - hotel, guesthouse or self catering? I am adding to the list of accommodation options on the site and there are links to the relevant pages of the hotel/guesthouse/self catering website. You can then email them or phone and ask for their current best deals.

I will have a section called “accommodation specials” pretty soon as well which I will gather from the accommodation providers themselves.

  3. Well, you’ve guessed correctly.
I found this site thru Google.
So my husband and I planned to spend end september begining october ‘07 in Ireland. Will be staying in a cottage in Courtown, Wexford which is quite close to Glendalough. Therefore we’ll definitely visit. We’re hiring a car so i’m planning some routes and locations.
    Great site!!
    Regards, Marie , (from Malta)

  4. Hello Marie,

Make sure to leave plenty of time to explore in Glendalough and do take in at least one of the walks around the lakes. Courtown is about 2 hours drive from Glendalough.

  5. Yes, I reached you by typing Glendalough in Google.
My wife and another couple are planning a trip to Ireland in October.
I printed the directions for driving from Dublin, and that’s very helpful. I had heard of a route called the Military road. Is that an option for driving from Dublin to Glendalough area?

  6. Hello Brent,

Yes, the Military Road is an option - it follows the regional route R115. The Military Road route starts out in Rathfarham which itself is accessible via the M50 ring road around Dublin. It’s a 45km trip (28 miles approx) and takes you on a more scenic route right over the mountains through the Sally Gap. You’ll see the Sally Gap marked on the map, where the R759 drops down towards Glendalough valley.

It’s a good long while since I’ve actually driven the route from Rathfarnham along the Military Road and there have been a lot of roadworks since that time, so I wasn’t 100% comfortable putting a route on the site that I wasn’t totally sure of.

Having said that, the Automobile Association in Ireland have a route planner, and it seems pretty good to me. If you go to http://www.aaroadwatch.ie/routes/ and then type in Rathfarnham as your as the From point, your TO point is Glendalough and then put Sally Gap as the VIA it will produce a complete journey plan.

I will refamiliarise myself with the route myself and produce something for the site here as well.

Any more questions, let me know

  9. Hi,

Yes I searched for Glendalough just so I could reminisce about the lovely trip my daughter and I took to Ireland last June (of 07). Our ancestors are from County Wicklow, you see. My daughter (now 18) has red hair - she said it was the only place she’d been where she blended in with everybody else!

We too were short of cash so we stayed in Dublin but took a Grayline bus tour to County Wicklow. The one thing I regret is that during our visit to Avoca that we didn’t have time to visit Fitzgerald’s pub. Ballykissangel is on our public television station every Saturday night (here in Southern California) and it’s always a thrill to see the scenery in Avoca.

To all who are considering a trip to Ireland - by all means visit Glendalough - it’s breathtakingly beautiful!

  10. Hi Alan,

It’s Gil here from the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team. You might want to include a link to our site on the Glendalough blog page due to the level of activity of novice hillwalkers in the area. We’re happy to provide information on safety in the Wicklow hills and include statistics and reports of callouts on our website. This might help some of our visitors to the area better plan a safe outing in the beautiful Glendalough valley.

Well done on the site - It’s a very nice job,

    Gil

  13. Hello!
I was in Glendalough in 1999. I went on a Grayline bus from Dublin to County Wicklow. It was my first time in Ireland. I was so enthusiastic. I fell in love with this lovely place and can not forget. It was like heaven.
I wish to come back soon, perhaps in 2008… Keep your fingers crossed for me!
    Best wishes
    Nicole Mäteling

  14. Hi Nicole,
Yes, fingers are crossed that your wish comes true and you will have a return visit.

  15. Hi Alan,

I am embarking on my first trip to Ireland in June! I will be with a Tour, but my first day in Dublin is a leisure day and I am looking to take a day trip to Glendalough and the Gardens of Powerscourt. The highly acclaimed Mary Gibbons Tours are already full so I was thinking of booking a tour with Bus Ireann. What is your opinion?

    Thanks!!
    Kellie

  16. Hey Kellie,

I know Bus Eireann do a tour, but I honestly haven’t heard any reports. I do know the Wild Wicklow Tour gets rave reviews though. I am actually going to set myself a mission to go on at least three of these tours before the busy season begins this year and post my reviews on the site here.

    Alan

  17. Yes I found your website by typing in Glendalough in my search engine. I am coming to Ireland with husband and two friends for a short visit in March. We have booked to stay in Dublin but would love to walk in the Glendalough area for a day. Unfortunately looking at the bus timetables on your site, it doesn’t look as if we would have long enough to do the Spink Loop walk. Do you have any other suggestions for a shorter walk?

  18. I would still recommend the Spinc walk, you can walk part of the way and back again along the same route in under 2 hours (at a decent pace) and it does offer the most magnificent views of the lake.

The other alternative is the walk along the lake to the old miner’s village and do a short climb up along the path of the Glenealo River which feeds down into the lake. Again, gives a nice view of the lake and a great photo opportunity.

  19. party of 39 on the 22May 2008, am or pm,would like to visit Glendalough. We are booked in to Fitz bar Avoca for lunch and Guinness. We are all retired, some not too mobile but we have our coach—–many thanks

  20. sorry gave the wrong e mail address earlier

  21. I’m another one who’s found you through Google. I’m coming to Ireland in september and staying most of the holiday in Kerry. On the drive back to Dublin, I’d like to visit Avoca and Gleendalough, maybe staying a night or two in the area. Can you tell be approx. how long it would take to drive from Glendalough to the airport? thank you. Sheila

  22. Hi Sheila

Journey time would be 2 hours approx.

    Alan

  23. I used your site (and bought you a cuppa) a few months back. I am now updating my blog (attached to the above website) and will be linking to you as a great resource for visiting Glendalough.

    Thanks!

  24. Hi Jody
THanks for the link and hope you did get the message I sent you in thanks for the cuppa a while back! It was much appreciated!

    Alan

  25. hello …i wa just wondering if you could tell me if there is any campsites in glendalough?

  26. There are no campsites in Glendalough and camping is forbidden in the valley. Nearest camping place is in Roundwood.

If you want to camp in the wild, you need a permit.
