Record numbers for 5th Annual Wicklow Summer Family Walk
The 5th Annual Wicklow Summer Family Walk which took place in Wicklow Town on Sunday 14th May had a record number of walkers. 154 people took part in the event and €13,950 was raised on the day with another few thousand Euro outstanding. The remaining amount will be collected for the Sponsors Draw which will be held on Wednesday 14th June @ 9pm in the Leitrim Lounge.
The walk started at 3pm and before the start, organiser and founder of the walk, Pat Lawless thanked the sponsors Panasonic Ireland, Coca-Cola, The Arklow Bay Hotel, James Gormley Estate Agent, Frank Lawless Alarms, the Leitrim Lounge and Gerry & Marie Moran for their generous support.
Pat also thanked the Wicklow People, Wicklow Times, Wicklow.com, St. Patrick’s Church and Ashford Church for their help in promoting the event. Pat also mentioned the WicklowSummerFamilyWalk website, set up by Stephen Lawless, which is a popular focal point for news and photographs from the event.
This year, a 10k race was also incorporated into the day’s proceedings and Mick Byrne from Parnell AC was the overall winner with a very competitive time of 31min 22sec for the distance of just under 10k. Fiona McKenna, the 14 year old wonder girl from Roundwood AC won the ladies race with a time of 37 min 52 sec.
Fiona is trained and coached by Terry Kavanagh who finished second in the Masters Male race. A father and son shared the winners rostrum in two different events. Ben Mooney from Invhear Dee finished 3rd in the Senior Mens Race, while his 10 year old son Robin Mooney finished second in the Junior Mens. Gerry Kinsella from Parnell AC was the winner of the Masters Male Race.
