Wicklow GAA begin search for caretaker manager
GAA chiefs in Wicklow were last night meeting to choose a caretaker manager for the county football team in the wake of the shock resignation of Hugh Kenny.
The Baltinglass man stepped down following Wicklow’s devastating nine points defeat by Carlow in Leinster championship on Sunday, following a poor display by the team.
Four candidates are believed to be in the frame - the three current selectors Conan Daye, Jimmy Callaghan and Anthony Gray, as well as Gerry Grehan, who acted in an advisory capacity to the selectors. County chairman Mick Hagan said that they wished to acknowledge the huge contribution made by Kenny in his three years as manager of the team.
“We certainly appreciate the effort he put in, his contribution has provided a stepping stone to make further progress,” said Hagan.
He accepted that it was going to be hard for the team to pick themselves up after the defeat by Carlow.
“Our performance against Carlow was well below par, but we can still bounce back,” he said.
