Wicklow’s public rights of way must be protected says McManus

Labour TD for Wicklow Liz McManus has expressed disappointment at the High Court today which overturned an earlier court decision in favour of protection of public rights-of-way.

Deputy McManus said: “Enniskerry Walking Group has been campaigning for the protection of public rights-of-way. The earlier Circuit Court case was very favourable towards this principle. It is extremely disappointing that today’s High Court decision has overturned the earlier judgment and appears to have found in favour of the rights of private property owners over the public good.

”It is about time that the Government proceeded to introduce new legislation to protect public rights-of-way nationally.

“I have undertaken that following a close reading of today’s judgment, the Labour Party will be taking legal advice, to prepare a Bill which will protect rights-of-way into the future. I will be working with local walking groups in Co Wicklow to ensure that this matter be progressed.

“I would hope that the Government would live up to its responsibility to ensure that we can keep Ireland open for local and visitors alike.
