Election predictions for 2007
In a special feature in the Sunday Tribune today, the Green Party is predicted to win a seat in County Wicklow…
“If the greens are going to advance in this election, they have to win a seat here with Deirdre de Burca. Problems with the other parties and the retirement of Mildred Fox mean they have a very good chance of doing so. Dick Roche, Liz McManus and Billy Timmins are safe but after that it’s pretty open. FF should have a second seat particularly now as it has finally selected its candidates. Labour’s Nicky Kelly came so close last time around but he doesn’t look as strong as he did in 2002. Prediction : 2 FF, 1 FG, 1 Labour, 1 Green (Green gain, Indepedent loss)”

I don’t believe the Greens have any chance of a seat in Wicklow. Looking at their share of all votes cast across the county in the 2004 locals, they’re about one third short of the first preferences they would need to make it to Leinster House. I don’t believe there are enough potential votes there for them to make up that deficit.

The Tribune might have got ahead of themselves that’s true. I can’t see 3 FF seats or a 2nd FG so to me it looks like Nicky Kelly.

Webmaster,
Given the closeness of the Fox/Kelly shakedown in 2002, that’s a credible prediction. Two FG seats seems far-fetched, but I would rule out altogether a three-seat haul for FF. Kelly probably has the edge at this point.

Meant to say I WOULDN’T rule out three seats for FF
