  1. Mr. O’Flaherty, et al,
Good afternoon from USA this Holy Saturday.
Just browsing through Wicklow.com, as I occaisionally do as a long time user of your e-mail of Irish descent on both sides, and checked out property listings out of curiosity after reading about the lowering of property prices which didn’t look very “lowered” to me. My God! How on Earth does anyone in Wicklow afford a house? You must all be millionaires & billionaires!
I’m wondering if the prices there are indicative of all of Ireland or if Wicklow is the prime property county of the country. We have some locations, such as the Los Angeles/Hollywood area here in the US, that have such prices, but here in Louisiana which is in the southern US on the Gulf of Mexico [Hurricane Katrina location] the average price of a three bedroom bungalow that is considered middle class is from just under $150K up to around $500K depending upon amenities, location, and property/acreage size. [And mostly these prices are due to property owners’ taking advantage of the poor souls who lost everything including their homes in the hurricane.] That ’s equivalent to from just under €112,116 to €.373,720 for the average middle class home. From looking at the house listings in the link on your site, that would only suffice for a downpayment in Wickow. Geez! I can’t imagine!
Great luck on your fund raiser for cancer research. The walk sounds like much fun.
I wish each of you a very happy and blessed Easter season.

  2. And a very Happy Easter to you also Lize. House prices in Ireland have risen an average of 270% in the last ten years - even more so in the counties that neighbour Dublin.

In practical terms, a single person wishes to buy a home in Wicklow Town for example would need a salary of €65,000 and around €30,000 to €40,000 in savings. A lot of the price increase has been driven by the investor market who buy property to rent out. Rental properties are in huge demand and with the growth in Ireland’s population anticipated to continue apace (driven largely by Immigration), I believe this temporary lull in prices won’t last long.
