The route from the western part of County Wicklow takes you through the most spectacular mountain scenery so there is no estimated time for travel on this route as you will probably want to stop several times for photo opportunities.

Basically, you will be driving to Glendalough through the ‘Wicklow Gap’. Your journey begins from the village of Hollywood. If you find yourself in the west of Dublin city, follow the route of the N81 to Blessington and keep on the N81 until you come to Hollywood (a distance of about 11km). Through the village of Hollywood you will then proceed in an easterly direction along the R756 which climbs into the mountains and eventually ends up in Glendalough Valley. This is a distance of about 26km. At the end of the road you just take a sharp turn right and at this point you are in Glendalough village itself.

The roads in the Wicklow mountains can be hazardous in the winter time and often they are completely cut off. So be aware, that if you are visiting in the winter time, you might want to check local weather conditions before you head off.

If you’ve found this post/site useful, and want to buy me a cup of tea I won’t say no!
